Kalangala District Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli will be buried on Thursday, April 24, at her ancestral home in Luwero District, following her death on Sunday after surgery at Alexandra Medical Centre went wrong.
Pathologists who conducted a post-mortem have told her party, the National Unity Platform, that they have not yet established the exact cause of her death. NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi said the doctors have promised a more comprehensive report and will return to Alexandra Medical Centre to audit the surgery procedure and review all medical records.
“The pathologists who have carried out a post-mortem report have told us they are still carrying out several tests to determine the actual cause of death,” Ssenyonyi said. He called on doctors to carry out a thorough assessment to answer the questions many people are asking about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among announced the full burial programme on Monday. The body left Mulago Hospital mortuary on Monday afternoon, transported by A-Plus Funeral Company through Nakiwogo and Entebbe to Kalangala District.
On Tuesday, a special session of the Kalangala District Council will be held, followed by public viewing, before the body is transported back to Kampala via the Masaka route for an overnight stay at a funeral home in Namungoona.
On Wednesday morning, the body will be taken to Parliament, where legislators will convene for a special sitting to pay tribute to their colleague. In the afternoon, it will be moved to NUP party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, before an official vigil at the family home in Namungoona.
The funeral service on Thursday will be held at Namungoona Orthodox Church, where Nakimuli was a member, before the body is taken to Luwero for burial.
Nakimuli’s death has left family, friends, and fellow politicians in shock. Among those who gathered at Mulago mortuary on Monday was her biological daughter, Melanire Namirimu, who was brought from Kibuli Secondary School still in her school uniform to accompany her mother’s body to Kalangala.
Nakimuli was one of the most outspoken opposition legislators in Parliament. She had just been re-elected to a second term as Kalangala Woman MP and was serving as shadow minister for ICT and National Guidance at the time of her death.
Speaker Among said in a statement: “The Parliament of Uganda stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and the people of Kalangala District. We honour the legacy of a dedicated legislator and tireless advocate for her people. May her soul rest in eternal peace.”
