Mourners Left in Shock After Coffin Refuses to Enter Homes of Deceased Man’s Two Wives

A burial ceremony in western Kenya ended in confusion after mourners claimed they were unable to carry a deceased man’s coffin into the homes of either of his two wives during traditional funeral rites.

The incident occurred after the man’s body was transported from the mortuary to his ancestral home, where relatives, friends and neighbours had gathered to pay their final respects.

According to Luhya cultural traditions, the body of a married man is first taken into the house of his first wife before being carried into the house of the second wife if he was polygamous. After the ritual, the coffin is placed outside the first wife’s home before burial begins. The practice is regarded as an important symbolic farewell.

Family members had prepared to follow the custom as usual, with pallbearers lifting the coffin and making their way toward the first wife’s house.

However, witnesses claimed the coffin could not be carried through the doorway despite several attempts.

Those present said the pallbearers repeatedly adjusted their positions and grip in an effort to move the coffin inside, but each attempt was unsuccessful. Some claimed the coffin suddenly became unusually heavy, forcing the men carrying it to stop.

The unexpected development left mourners puzzled, with some praying while others tried to understand what had happened.

Hoping the difficulty was limited to one house, the family proceeded to the home of the second wife to complete the same ritual.

According to witnesses, the pallbearers encountered the same challenge and again failed to carry the coffin through the entrance despite the combined effort of several men.

The incident left many mourners visibly emotional and sparked widespread speculation among those attending the funeral.

While some interpreted the events as having spiritual significance, others suggested there may have been practical reasons for the difficulty and cautioned against jumping to conclusions. No official explanation was immediately available.
