Police Arrest Man for Posing as Female Housemaid to Steal From Employers

    By OnionJuly 16, 2026

Police in Nateete Division have arrested a man accused of posing as a female domestic worker to secure employment before allegedly stealing from households in Kampala.

The suspect, identified as Kayaga Rayan, is alleged to have used the name Namirembe Rukia while applying for jobs as a housemaid, according to police.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Kayaga allegedly disguised himself as a woman to gain the trust of prospective employers before targeting them for theft. His latest assignment was at a home in Mutundwe, Rubaga Division, where he is accused of stealing UGX 1.7 million from his employers.

Police say the suspect’s alleged scheme came to light after he was arrested at a church in Mutundwe. Security personnel carrying out routine screening before a church service reportedly became suspicious and detained him before alerting authorities.

Following his arrest, the employers conducted a check at their home and reportedly discovered that UGX 1.7 million was missing. They subsequently filed a complaint with police, prompting further investigations.

During questioning, investigators say the suspect allegedly admitted that he had been disguising himself as a female domestic worker to obtain employment and steal from employers. Police emphasized that the alleged confession is part of the ongoing investigation and should not be taken as proof of guilt, noting that the suspect remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Kayaga is currently being held at Nateete Police Station as detectives finalize their investigations. He is expected to be produced in court once inquiries are complete.

The Uganda Police Force has since urged the public to be more vigilant when hiring domestic workers and other household employees. Authorities advised employers to verify the identities, backgrounds and references of prospective workers before offering them jobs.

Police also appealed to members of the public to report suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station to help prevent similar incidents as investigations into the alleged theft continue.
