President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to veteran politician and retired military officer Gen. Moses Ali, describing him as a loyal patriot whose decades of service to Uganda will be greatly missed.
Gen. Ali, the longtime Member of Parliament for Adjumani West and former Second Deputy Prime Minister, died on Saturday at Nakasero Hospital at the age of 87.
In a statement shared on X, Museveni announced the veteran leader’s death and praised his contribution to Uganda both as a soldier and a statesman.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of our brother Gen. Moses Ali. He died today at Nakasero Hospital at 1600 hours. Gen. Moses Ali has provided service to his country for a long time, as a soldier and a political leader,” Museveni said.
The President also commended Gen. Ali for setting an example outside public office through modern commercial farming in the West Nile region.
“In the West Nile region, he provided the good example of being a big modern farmer. We shall miss greatly his contribution.”
Museveni concluded his message by praying for the late leader.
“May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace.”
Gen. Ali was one of Uganda’s longest-serving political figures, with a public career that spanned several decades. He recently retained his parliamentary seat for Adjumani West and previously served as Second Deputy Prime Minister, among other senior Cabinet positions.
His political career began during the 1970s when he served as a Cabinet minister under former President Idi Amin. Following the fall of Amin’s government, he formed a rebel group that later joined forces with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) after President Museveni took power in 1986.
Over the years, Gen. Ali held several key ministerial portfolios and became one of the most influential political leaders from the West Nile sub-region.
Although he was left out of Cabinet during this year’s reshuffle, he remained active in politics after winning re-election as the Member of Parliament for Adjumani West.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders across Uganda. Among those who mourned him was NRM Vice Chairman for Eastern Uganda Mike Mukula, who described Gen. Ali as a courageous soldier, respected elder statesman and a leader whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family and government.
