Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has met tour guides at Skyz Hotel in Kampala to discuss tourism operations, conservation management and ways the two sides can work more closely together. The meeting, which brought together guides from different parts of the country, gave both parties a chance to raise concerns and get clarity on a number of changes affecting the tourism sector. Uganda Wildlife Authority has launched a dedicated rhino sanctuary inside Kidepo Valley National Park, marking the first concrete step towards reintroducing rhinoceros to the park where the species was hunted to extinction more than four decades ago. Construction of a 17,050-acre fenced sanctuary in the Narus Valley is already underway, with plans to settle an initial population of southern white rhinos before eventually introducing eastern black rhinos. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, has officially unveiled the results of the 2025 Chimpanzee Census in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, confirming a thriving population of 426 chimpanzees in the protected area. The landmark census the first of its kind in Bwindi was conducted in two comprehensive sweeps between May and September 2025. A suspected ivory trafficker is in custody after security agencies seized 154 kilograms of raw elephant ivory in Nwoya District, in one of the latest enforcement actions targeting wildlife crime in northern Uganda. Opiro Francis was picked up on February 22 while found in possession of ten pieces of raw elephant tusks. He will be charged with unlawful possession of protected wildlife specimens under the Uganda Wildlife Act Cap 315 and produced before the Standards, Utilities and Wildlife Court for prosecution.
