Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has met tour guides at Skyz Hotel in Kampala to discuss tourism operations, conservation management and ways the two sides can work more closely together.
The meeting, which brought together guides from different parts of the country, gave both parties a chance to raise concerns and get clarity on a number of changes affecting the tourism sector.
UWA Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi told the guides that gorilla permit prices will be reduced during the low season months of April, May and November, dropping from $800 to $600. He said an official document with more details on the new tariffs will be released soon.
The price cut is expected to attract more tourists during the slow months of the year, which would in turn benefit guides and other players in the tourism business.
Acting Commissioner for Tourism and Business Development Dorcus Rukundo used the meeting to introduce guides to a range of new tourism products that UWA is developing. These include a glass bridge over the Nile, canopy walks, houseboats, golden cat tracking, zip lining and hot air balloon rides.
Rukundo said the new products are aimed at giving tourists more options and encouraging them to spend more time exploring Uganda’s parks and natural attractions.
The meeting comes at a time when the tourism sector is still recovering and looking for new ways to grow. For many guides, the lower permit prices and the promise of fresh attractions are steps in the right direction.
