Uganda has officially launched the use of locally manufactured diagnostic kits, taking a major step toward self-reliance in healthcare marking a turning point for both public health and local industry under the Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) policy.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng presided over the Thursday launch at Kampala Serena Hotel, signaling strong political backing for homegrown medical innovation.
Behind the kits is Microhaem Scientifics Ltd, a Kampala-based biotech company whose products target some of Uganda’s most persistent health threats: HIV, malaria, and sickle cell disease.
Speaking to journalists at the event, the company’s Managing Director Dr. Cedric Akwesigye traced the journey to 2021, when the firm broke ground on its Ntinda manufacturing plant. Full operations began in 2023, followed by a rigorous certification process benchmarked against World Health Organization standards.
A government procurement last year put the kits through performance evaluation before any public rollout was considered. The tests passed.
“The products were subjected to validation and proved effective. This launch marks the beginning of integrating locally manufactured diagnostics into the national healthcare system,” Dr. Akwesigye said.
The company is not stopping there. Dr. Akwesigye disclosed that six more medical products are on track for release by June, spanning stem cell-related therapies and other advanced treatment options.
He also issued a broader call to action, pointing to the billions Africa loses annually by depending on imported medical supplies and urging deeper investment in local pharmaceutical and biotech sectors.
For Uganda’s healthcare system, the implications go beyond national pride. Locally made diagnostics are expected to bring down costs, shorten supply chains, and put disease detection tools within reach of more patients across the country.
