Shock as UCU Law Student Dies Days Before Completing Studies

    By OnionJune 2, 2026

Grief has engulfed the Uganda Christian University (UCU) community following the death of fourth-year law student Ryan Kubahika, whose family says a postmortem examination revealed blood clots around his heart and lungs.

The 22-year-old student died on the evening of May 29 after suddenly developing breathing difficulties while spending time with friends near campus.

According to family members, medical findings indicated that Kubahika suffered from a lack of oxygen, a congested brain, and blood clots that had formed around vital organs. The revelations were made during a requiem service attended by relatives, friends, students, and university staff.

Friends who were with him during his final hours said he had appeared healthy throughout the day. After socializing with colleagues, he reportedly took a short rest before his condition suddenly worsened.

Concerned by his unusual behavior, friends checked on him and found him struggling to breathe. They immediately rushed him to a nearby clinic, where health workers advised them to seek treatment at a better-equipped facility. He was then transferred to a hospital in Mukono for emergency care.

However, despite efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The sudden loss has left classmates and friends in shock, with many describing Kubahika as cheerful, friendly, and full of life. Several student leaders and colleagues remembered him as someone who easily connected with others and brought joy to those around him.

University officials also paid tribute to the deceased, praising his character and positive relationship with fellow students.

During the memorial service, family members reflected on his life and described him as a loving son and brother whose memory would remain with them forever.

Religious leaders used the occasion to encourage believers to value life and remain prepared for the uncertainties that come with it.

Kubahika, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Laws degree in his fourth year, was widely admired among his peers for his warm personality and active involvement in student life.

His death has sparked an outpouring of condolences from the university community as friends, classmates, and relatives continue to mourn the loss of a promising young man whose life ended unexpectedly.
