67-Year-Old LCI Village Chairperson Bids for Another Term After 40 Years

    By Aijuka PeterJuly 21, 2026

A long-serving Local Council I (LC I) chairperson in Ibanda Municipality has declared his intention to seek another term in the upcoming village elections, saying he is still committed to serving his community after nearly four decades in office.

Ssali Kyeyune, 67, who has chaired Katoma I Cell in Kagongo Division since 1986, said he believes his experience remains valuable in addressing community challenges and guiding local development.

Kyeyune said he is willing to support younger leaders in the future but believes leadership should be handed over only to people who have demonstrated the ability to serve residents effectively.

He also remarked that he intends to remain in elective politics for as long as President Yoweri Museveni remains in office, a position he says reflects his confidence in continuity of leadership.

His comments come as campaigns intensify ahead of Uganda’s nationwide LC I elections, which are scheduled to take place on July 28.

The Electoral Commission is expected to oversee polls in more than 71,000 villages across the country, with residents electing chairpersons who will oversee grassroots administration and community affairs.

The village elections form part of the country’s broader Local Council electoral programme aimed at filling leadership positions at the lowest level of government.
