Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has questioned the leadership credentials of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine, accusing him of abandoning his supporters shortly after losing the January 2026 presidential election.
In a strongly worded post on X, Kainerugaba criticized the opposition leader for leaving Uganda days after the polls and remaining in the United States for months while his party continued to navigate the aftermath of the election.
“Imagine a 46-year-old so-called leader of the opposition, who mobilises people to vote for him and his party and then escapes to the USA, 9 days after the elections and remains there on holiday for 6 months. Leaving his party without any direction,” Kainerugaba wrote.
The CDF’s remarks came after Bobi Wine launched a fresh attack on Kainerugaba, questioning his conduct and leadership of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Kainerugaba’s comments have reignited debate over Bobi Wine’s decision to leave the country following the election. Critics of the opposition leader argue that political leaders should remain with their supporters during difficult periods, especially after a major electoral contest.
Supporters of Kainerugaba pointed to President Yoweri Museveni’s continued presence and leadership in Uganda over the years, arguing that national leaders are expected to stand with their followers regardless of political challenges.
The January 2026 elections ended with Museveni securing another term in office. While Bobi Wine and his party rejected the results and alleged irregularities, Kainerugaba’s supporters maintain that leaving the country weakened the opposition’s ability to organize and provide direction to its supporters.
The exchange marks the latest confrontation between Kainerugaba and Bobi Wine, whose political rivalry has frequently played out on social media. Their public disagreements have become a regular feature of Uganda’s political discourse, drawing strong reactions from both supporters and critics.
As debate continues online, Kainerugaba’s latest remarks have placed renewed focus on questions of leadership, political accountability, and the role opposition figures should play after an election defeat.
Neither Bobi Wine nor the National Unity Platform had publicly responded to Kainerugaba’s latest comments at the time of publication.
