A couple returning home in the early hours of the morning narrowly survived a violent robbery after they were ambushed by a group of armed men in a terrifying incident captured on CCTV cameras.
The attack occurred at around 2 a.m. in Kigwanya Zone, Nabbingo Parish, Kyengera Town Council in Wakiso District, where the victims were reportedly walking home from work when they encountered a gang of about seven men armed with pangas.
Footage from security cameras shows the couple being confronted by the attackers before the situation quickly turned violent. The woman attempted to flee after realizing they were being attacked, but some of the suspects reportedly chased her down and robbed her of her belongings.
Her male companion was not as fortunate. According to reports, the gang surrounded him, assaulted him and robbed him before inflicting serious injuries using pangas. The disturbing footage shows the victim pleading with the attackers as they continued their assault.
The victim’s cries for help echoed through the area as dogs in nearby compounds barked frantically. After robbing and injuring him, the attackers eventually fled the scene, allowing the man to escape and seek assistance.
The video has since circulated widely on social media, sparking outrage and renewed concerns over security in urban communities. Many residents expressed fears over the growing number of violent robberies carried out by machete-wielding gangs operating at night.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, confirmed that investigations into the incident are underway.
“Our attention has been drawn to a video circulating on social media depicting a group of men assaulting an individual using pangas. Police at Nsangi have taken up the matter, and investigations are actively underway,” Kawala said.
Police said the suspects fled immediately after the attack and had not been arrested by the time of reporting. Authorities have since launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend those responsible.
“Our task team is making every effort to identify, trace and apprehend the suspects so they can be brought to justice,” Kawala added.
The incident has renewed calls for enhanced night patrols and stronger security measures in residential areas as residents demand action against violent criminal gangs targeting unsuspecting members of the public.
