A 16-year-old student of New Life Secondary School in Luwero Town Council has died following an alleged assault by a teacher, police have said.
The deceased, identified as Nicholas Nakibinge, was a Senior Four student at the school. Another student who was reportedly beaten during the same incident survived and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to preliminary police investigations, the incident occurred at around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday within the school premises. Nakibinge allegedly sustained serious injuries during the assault and later died while being rushed to Luwero Hospital for medical attention.
Police have identified the main suspect as Abraham Mukalazi, a Physics teacher at the school. Authorities say the teacher fled shortly after the incident and is currently on the run.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima confirmed the incident and said two other teachers have been arrested to assist investigators as efforts to trace Mukalazi continue.
“The suspect is being hunted by police, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing,” Twiineamazima said.
Detectives are now working to establish what led to the alleged assault and determine the events that unfolded before Nakibinge sustained the fatal injuries.
Meanwhile, police have directed that the body of the deceased be transferred to Mulago Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
The incident has sparked concern among parents and residents in Luwero as authorities continue their investigations into the tragic death of the student.
