Police in Moroto have launched a manhunt for the driver of a trailer belonging to Yaobai Cement Factory following a road crash that claimed the life of a police officer along the Moroto-Soroti Road.
The fatal accident happened on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m. near the entrance to Yaobai Cement Factory in Nadunget Sub-county.
According to Mt. Moroto Regional Police spokesperson Mike Longole, the deceased has been identified as Police Constable Isaac Ogira, who was attached to the Anti Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) Moroto Zonal Headquarters.
Longole said Ogira was riding a Yamaha YBR motorcycle, registration number UP 8113, from the ASTU Police Barracks in Nadunget towards Moroto Town when he collided with a trailer that was entering the main road from the factory premises.
The trailer involved in the crash is a white CHACKMAN truck bearing registration number UA 783EZ.
Police said the driver abandoned the scene immediately after the collision and remains on the run.
Preliminary findings indicate that the crash was caused by careless driving on the part of the trailer driver.
Traffic police and scene-of-crime investigators responded to the accident, documented the scene and transported Ogira’s body to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Both the trailer and the damaged motorcycle were towed to Moroto Central Police Station as investigators continue gathering evidence and searching for the driver.
Police have appealed to members of the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the driver of motor vehicle UA 783EZ. Anyone with relevant information has been asked to report to Moroto Central Police Station, the nearest police station or the ASTU Zonal Headquarters in Nadunget.
Longole also urged motorists to exercise extra caution when joining major roads, saying greater care can help reduce road crashes and save lives.
