Teacher Salary Increase: See New Monthly Pay for Primary Teachers, Arts Teachers and Headteachers Revealed

    By OnionJuly 3, 2026

Thousands of teachers employed by the government will begin earning higher salaries from July 2026 after the Ministry of Public Service unveiled a new salary structure aimed at improving pay across the education sector.

The revised salaries, announced by Minister of Public Service Gen. Katumba Wamala, will benefit several categories of teachers, including primary school teachers, graduate arts teachers, primary school headteachers and arts-based secondary school headteachers.

While presenting the government’s latest salary review, Gen. Katumba described the teachers’ pay rise as one of the most significant highlights of the latest public service salary enhancement programme.

Primary school teachers holding Grade III certificates will receive a monthly salary of UGX 700,000, up from the current UGX 499,684. The increase is expected to improve earnings for thousands of teachers working in government primary schools across the country.

Primary school headteachers will also receive a substantial pay rise. Their monthly salary will increase from UGX 777,512 to UGX 1,537,976, nearly doubling their current earnings.

Graduate arts teachers are among the other beneficiaries under the new pay structure. Their salaries will rise from UGX 745,000 to UGX 1,357,964 per month, reflecting the government’s continued efforts to narrow the salary gap between different categories of public servants.

Arts-based secondary school headteachers will also see a notable increase. Under the revised structure, their monthly salary will rise from UGX 2,270,984 to UGX 3,162,500.

According to Gen. Katumba, the adjustments are part of the government’s ongoing programme to improve the welfare of teachers and strengthen the education sector by offering more competitive salaries.

The revised salary structure is scheduled to take effect in July 2026 as part of the new financial year.

New Monthly Salaries Effective July 2026
