Construction of the 20,000-seat Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City has reached an advanced stage, with key works now nearing completion ahead of its expected handover.
Most of the major construction activities, including the installation of seats, roofing, interior finishing, and painting, have been substantially completed, giving a clear picture of what will become one of Uganda’s most modern sports facilities.
Named in honor of Uganda’s Olympic legend John Akii-Bua, the stadium is being constructed by SAMCO National Construction Company as part of the government’s efforts to improve sports infrastructure across the country.
Once completed, the multi-purpose sports complex will feature a standard eight-lane athletics track, a modern indoor sports arena, a swimming pool, and several auxiliary facilities designed to meet international competition standards.
Project officials say construction remains on schedule, with completion expected between the end of 2026 and early 2027.
The facility is expected to play a key role in expanding Uganda’s capacity to host major sporting events, including regional and continental competitions. It is also among the venues being prepared as Uganda gets ready to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
Images captured during a guided tour of the construction site reveal the remarkable transformation of the stadium, with its seating sections, roof structure, and exterior works now taking their final shape.
Once officially commissioned, the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium is expected to become the biggest sporting facility in Northern Uganda and a major boost to sports development, tourism, and economic activity in the region.
