Here Are 5 Reasons Why You Should Never Go To The Toilet With Your Phone

    By OnionJune 20, 2026

For many people, taking a phone to the toilet has become second nature. Whether it is scrolling through social media, replying to messages, watching videos, or catching up on the news, smartphones often accompany us everywhere, including the bathroom.

While the habit may seem harmless, health experts warn that using your phone on the toilet can have unexpected consequences for both your health and hygiene. Recent studies and medical professionals have highlighted several reasons why it may be time to leave your phone outside the bathroom door.

    1. Your Phone Becomes a Breeding Ground for Germs

Bathrooms contain millions of bacteria and other microorganisms. When you use your phone in the toilet, harmful germs can easily transfer onto the device through your hands or from contaminated surfaces.

Unlike your hands, which are washed after using the toilet, phones are rarely cleaned thoroughly. As a result, bacteria can remain on the device and later spread to your face, hands, food, or other surfaces you touch throughout the day.

    2. It Increases the Risk of Hemorrhoids

One of the biggest concerns associated with phone use on the toilet is the amount of extra time people spend sitting there.

A 2026 study found that individuals who use smartphones while on the toilet were significantly more likely to develop hemorrhoids than those who did not. Researchers believe the distraction causes people to remain seated longer than necessary, increasing pressure on the veins around the rectum.

    3. Poor Posture Can Lead to Neck and Back Pain

Most people hunch over their phones while scrolling, creating strain on the neck, shoulders, and lower back. When this posture is maintained for extended periods in the bathroom, it can contribute to discomfort and musculoskeletal problems over time.

Health experts say frequent phone use on the toilet can reinforce poor posture habits that eventually lead to chronic pain.

    4. You Spend More Time in the Bathroom Than Necessary

What starts as a quick bathroom visit can easily turn into a 10 or 15-minute scrolling session. Many people lose track of time while checking social media, reading articles, or watching videos.

Experts warn that prolonged sitting on the toilet places unnecessary stress on the pelvic floor and digestive system. It can also interfere with natural bowel habits and encourage unhealthy bathroom routines.

    5. You Risk Damaging or Losing Your Phone

Bathrooms are not the safest places for electronic devices. Phones can easily slip from your hands and fall into the toilet, sink, or onto hard tiled floors.

Apart from the cost of repairs or replacement, recovering a phone from a toilet is an experience most people would rather avoid. Keeping your device outside the bathroom eliminates that risk altogether.

    The Bottom Line

Taking your phone to the toilet may seem like a harmless way to pass the time, but it can expose you to germs, encourage unhealthy bathroom habits, increase the risk of hemorrhoids, and even contribute to neck and back problems. Experts recommend keeping bathroom visits short and leaving your phone outside whenever possible.

A few minutes away from your screen could benefit both your health and your hygiene.
