Five people have been killed and 28 others injured following a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck transporting beverages in Iringa Region, central Tanzania.
The crash involved a bus belonging to Shabiby Company, which was travelling from Dodoma to Mbeya, and a truck carrying soft drinks. Authorities said the collision occurred after the truck reportedly lost control while descending a steep section of road in the Tanangozi area.
Officials at Iringa Regional Referral Hospital confirmed receiving 28 injured passengers as well as the bodies of five people who died in the accident.
Dr Alfred Mwakalebela, a medical officer at the hospital, said the injured included 16 males, among them four children, and 12 females. Several victims sustained serious injuries and remain under medical care.
According to hospital officials, one patient suffered severe head injuries and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, while another lost an eye during the crash. Arrangements were made to transfer the most critically injured patient to Muhimbili National Hospital for specialized treatment.
Dr Mwakalebela said medical teams were continuing to monitor and treat the remaining patients, while 11 people who sustained minor injuries were discharged after receiving treatment.
Iringa Regional Police Commander Allan Bukumbi attributed the accident to the truck driver’s failure to maintain control of the vehicle while navigating the steep slope at Tanangozi.
He urged motorists, especially operators of heavy commercial vehicles, to carry out thorough vehicle inspections before and during journeys to reduce the risk of mechanical failures and road crashes.
Authorities have launched investigations into the incident as efforts continue to support survivors and establish the full circumstances surrounding the deadly collision.
