Seven churchgoers are dead after a speeding car lost control and ploughed into them along the Mbarara-Bushenyi highway in Kabwohe on Saturday morning. The crash happened at around 6:30 a.m. as the group walked home from an overnight prayer service.
The victims have been identified as Dinavance Komugisha, 47, Jane Rosa Kobusigye, 69, Precious Ampereza, 12, Editor Komugisha, 40, Harriet Asiimwe, 57, and Grace Namara, 27, all female. Two others, Bruno Bimanyamukama, 16, and Vicky Amanya, 13, survived with injuries and are currently receiving emergency treatment at ICOBI Hospital.
The group had attended an overnight prayer service at St. Rose Catholic Church in Kabwohe and were walking back to their homes in , Kabingo, Kitooha, and Karushegu when a black Toyota Fielder, registration UAT 702D, veered off course and struck them. All seven died at the scene.
An eyewitness, Ms. Mariespe Nsiimire, described the horror of what unfolded. “The car was running at high speed, and it came to our side where we were walking from the side of the road, so it lost control and rammed into us, so we had to run away, and those who were behind me are the ones who were seriously affected and knocked down,” she said.
The driver fled the scene before police arrived. Traffic officers reached the site shortly after to manage the wreckage and have since begun looking into the circumstances of the crash.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kabwohe Health Centre mortuary for postmortem examinations. Greater Bushenyi regional police had not released an official statement on the cause of the crash by press time.
