Two Christians lost their lives on Wednesday morning after a road crash involving a motorcycle and a vehicle in Lwengo District.
The victims have been identified as 83-year-old Josephine Nakitto and 25-year-old Alex Ssenono, the motorcycle rider. Both were residents of Bugonzi Village in Lwengo District.
The two were travelling to Mbiriizi Catholic Parish to attend Mass marking Uganda Martyrs Day when the accident occurred.
Eyewitnesses say a speeding government-owned Toyota Hilux veered off the road at Kyetume Village around 9am and rammed into the motorcycle they were riding on.
One of the victims died at the scene while the other succumbed to injuries while being rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.
Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the incident and said investigations had begun. He also noted that the driver fled the scene after the crash.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Local leaders have raised concerns about road safety in the area. Lwengo Rural Sub-county Chairperson Kizito Lawrence called for more road signs, especially at bends, and urged authorities to introduce stronger speed control measures.
He said the stretch of road where the crash occurred has seen several accidents in recent years due to a dangerous curve that drivers often fail to navigate safely.
