At least seven people have been killed and 17 others injured following a road accident involving a passenger minibus and a cargo truck in central Tanzania.
The crash occurred on the morning of June 2, 2026, at Sekenke Hill in Iramba District, located in Tanzania’s Singida Region.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened when the truck, which was traveling from the commercial capital of Dar es Salaam to the northern city of Mwanza, reportedly suffered brake failure and collided with a minibus traveling from Singida to Tabora Region.
The impact forced the minibus off the road and into a ravine, resulting in multiple casualties.
Health officials said six people were pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim later died in hospital, bringing the death toll to seven.
Dr. Peter Janga, Chief Medical Officer at Iramba District Hospital, said the facility received 17 injured passengers along with the bodies of six victims.
“We received reports that the vehicles collided and fell into a ravine, which caused multiple injuries. Most patients sustained injuries to different parts of their bodies,” Dr. Janga said.
He added that the remaining injured patients were in stable condition and continued to receive treatment.
One of the survivors, Emmanuel Sande, said he was traveling aboard the minibus on his way to Igunga District in neighboring Tabora Region when the crash occurred.
Sande recalled that he had fallen asleep during the journey and only became aware of the accident after the collision.
“We were traveling, and I was asleep. When I woke up, I found we had been involved in an accident. I thank God that despite the injuries, we survived,” he said.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with preliminary reports pointing to possible brake failure on the truck.
Efforts to obtain comment from the Singida Regional Police Commander were unsuccessful before publication, as police officials said he was attending a meeting.
Road accidents remain a significant safety concern in Tanzania, where speeding, mechanical failures, and poor road conditions are often cited among the leading causes of fatal crashes.
