Muhoozi Meets Nation Media Group Leadership Over NTV, Daily Monitor Closure

    By OnionJuly 1, 2026

Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has held talks with the leadership of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda as discussions continue over the closure of the company’s media outlets, including NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor.

The meeting took place at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe and brought together NMG owner Rostam Aziz, his son Saam Aziz, and Georgia Mutagaywa, Chief of Staff at Taarifa Limited, the parent company of NMG.

Also present were veteran journalist and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) leader Andrew Mwenda and the Acting UPDF Director of Defence Public Information, Col. Chris Magezi.

The meeting follows the closure of NMG Uganda’s offices by security agencies on the orders of Gen. Kainerugaba. The CDF accused the media house of running what he described as a sustained campaign of blackmail against the Ugandan government and its leaders, while promoting opposition and foreign interests.

According to information released after the meeting, both sides discussed several reports that the government considers biased and inaccurate. NMG’s leadership reportedly committed to pursuing journalism that is balanced, objective and in the national interest.

The discussions form part of ongoing efforts to resolve the dispute between the government and the media organisation.

Gen. Kainerugaba later said he would submit a report on the outcome of the meeting to President Yoweri Museveni, who will consider it before a final decision is made on whether NTV Uganda, the Daily Monitor and other affected NMG operations will be allowed to resume.
