Parts Of The Body You Will Feel Pain If The Liver Is Swollen Due to Diseases

    By OnionJune 12, 2026

The liver is one of the hardest-working organs in the body. It helps remove toxins, supports digestion, and stores important nutrients. When it becomes swollen due to conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or infections, the body often sends warning signals that should not be ignored.

One of the first places where discomfort may appear is the upper right side of the abdomen. Since the liver sits in this area, swelling can create a feeling of pressure, fullness, or a dull ache beneath the ribs. Some people notice the discomfort more after meals.

A swollen liver can also cause pain in the right shoulder. This may sound surprising, but the nerves connected to the liver can send pain signals to nearby areas. As a result, a person may feel shoulder pain even when there is no injury to the shoulder itself.

The upper back is another area that may be affected. Some individuals experience an aching sensation on the right side of the back. Because back pain is common, many people fail to connect it to possible liver problems.

Tenderness around the lower ribs can also develop. Everyday movements such as bending, stretching, or taking deep breaths may become uncomfortable when an enlarged liver presses against surrounding tissues.

Beyond physical pain, a swollen liver can affect how a person feels overall. Constant tiredness, low energy levels, nausea, and a reduced appetite are common complaints. The body may feel weaker than usual, making daily activities more difficult.

In more serious cases, the skin and eyes may begin to appear yellow. This condition, known as jaundice, is an important warning sign that the liver is struggling to function properly and requires medical attention.

The body has a unique way of alerting us when something is wrong. Persistent pain in the abdomen, shoulder, ribs, or back should never be ignored, especially when it is accompanied by fatigue or other unusual symptoms. Paying attention to these signs and seeking medical advice early can make a significant difference in protecting liver health and maintaining overall well-being.
