Doctors in the United States and Aga Khan Hospital in Kenya have advised Kampala District Woman Member of Parliament Shamim Malende to retire from active politics if she wants to live longer according to the reports.
Ms Malende, a seasoned lawyer and National Unity Platform legislator, is according to the reports currently admitted at a specialised hospital in the United States where she is being treated for a condition suspected to involve poisoning.
According to highly placed sources close to the MP, she is likely to step away from politics following advice from her doctors and consultations with family members, even after successfully retaining her seat in the recently concluded parliamentary elections.
Her family had raised concerns about her health a few years ago when she developed a condition that doctors at a Nairobi hospital have since been struggling to treat. She returned briefly for campaigns before travelling back for further treatment.
Ms Malende has not been seen in public since she was declared winner of her seat.
She is however expected back in Uganda ahead of her swearing-in, scheduled for May 2026, as the political situation in the country continues to normalise.
