A young man identified simply as Abbas is facing criminal charges in Yobe State after he was apprehended while allegedly dressed in women’s attire in what authorities say was a deliberate attempt to gain unsupervised access to his girlfriend at her father’s residence in the state.
According to sources familiar with the incident, Abbas reportedly donned a hijab and female clothing to blend in with female members of the household, hoping to visit his girlfriend without the knowledge or consent of her father. The ruse was uncovered when a member of the family became suspicious and alerted the household, leading to his exposure and subsequent arrest.
“He was brought in dressed in women’s clothing. The father of the girl was not aware of their relationship and the young man used the disguise to gain entry into the house.”
Yobe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, operates under Sharia law, which has governed the state’s penal code since the early 2000s. Under this framework, cross-dressing is treated as a criminal offence, and unsanctioned interaction between unmarried men and women can also attract legal penalties.
Abbas is currently being held in custody pending arraignment. It remains unclear at this stage whether charges will relate specifically to the act of cross-dressing, unlawful entry, or both. Legal observers note that convictions under similar circumstances in the region have resulted in fines, flogging, or custodial sentences depending on the discretion of the Sharia court.
The incident has drawn widespread attention on social media, with many Nigerians drawing comparisons to folklore and films featuring similar ruses, while others have raised questions about the lengths young couples go to in states where premarital contact is criminalised. Rights advocates have also used the case to renew calls for dialogue on the intersection of personal freedoms and religious law in northern Nigeria.
The girlfriend, whose identity has not been disclosed, was not reported to have been charged. It is not yet known whether she was aware of or consented to Abbas’s plan. Court proceedings are expected to commence in the coming days.
