“We Are Changing Lives, Not Just Screening Eyes”- Sheena Ruparelia at Bukedea Medical Camp

    By Aijuka PeterMarch 29, 2026

More than 1,100 people have been screened and over 330 referred for surgery at the Rajiv Ruparelia Memorial Eye Camp in Bukedea, with the three-day free medical outreach entering its final day at Bukedea Teaching Hospital.

Dozens of operations have already been completed for both adults and children, and hundreds of patients have walked away with prescription glasses, many receiving professional eye care for the very first time.

Ruparelia Foundation trustee Sheena Ruparelia said the numbers tell only part of the story. “One child received their first pair of glasses,” she said. “You can imagine how that will change their experience in school.”

The camp, held in memory of the late Rajiv Ruparelia, is offering free screening, treatment, surgery, and glasses to thousands of residents across the region. Sheena said her brother’s approach to giving is what shapes how the foundation operates. “My brother Rajiv never believed in doing anything small. He believed in doing big, impactful things, and that is exactly what we are doing here.”

Support has stretched beyond medical care. Patients who could not afford transport or accommodation have been sheltered and looked after, with Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among credited for stepping in to make that possible. Some volunteers have gone further, opening their own homes to patients overnight.

One child with a complex condition has already been referred to the Uganda Cancer Institute for specialized treatment, underlining the camp’s commitment to follow-through. “We are not just screening people and sending them away,” Sheena said. “Those who need further care are being referred and supported.”

Organizers credit the turnout to a coalition of doctors, medical students, partner organizations, and media coverage that drew patients from across the region. The camp runs through Sunday.

“We want people to leave here seeing better, living better, and feeling hopeful again. That is what this is all about.”
