A domestic dispute turned deadly in Pallisa District after a man succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent confrontation at his in-laws’ home.
The deceased, identified as Charles Faustine Okonye, 38, a resident of Kadoki Village in Akadot Parish, died while receiving treatment at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital following an alleged fight over a woman identified as Rose Apio.
According to police, Okonye had travelled to his in-laws’ residence to resolve marital issues with Apio, who had reportedly returned to her parents’ home after disagreements in their marriage. He later spent the night at the home with the woman.
Trouble erupted during the night when another man, suspected to have a romantic relationship with Apio, reportedly entered the home and confronted Okonye. The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical fight.
Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson ASP Wilfred Kyempasa said preliminary investigations indicate that the two men exchanged blows both inside and outside the house, leaving Okonye seriously injured.
Family members and neighbours who responded to the incident rushed him to Pallisa General Hospital before he was referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for specialized treatment. However, he later died from his injuries.
Police initially registered the case as attempted murder, but it has since been upgraded to murder following Okonye’s death.
Two suspects have been arrested to assist with investigations, according to police.
Okonye’s body was transferred to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
