Kyambogo University is mourning the death of a third-year student who was found dead in his hostel room on Wednesday, with the cause of death confirmed as an undetected heart condition.
Kamugisha Brighton, a Bachelor of Textiles and Apparel Design student attached to Kulubya Hall, was found lifeless in his room.
Police responded to the scene and transported his body to the City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination, which established that he died of Hypertrophic Heart Disease, a condition affecting the heart muscle that frequently goes undetected in young people.
In a death announcement dated May 14, 2026, Dean of Students Bridget Mugume confirmed the passing to Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka. Brighton, who carried registration number 23/U/TAD/06361/PD, was in his second semester of third year.
He hailed from Rwenyonyozi village in Itojo, Ntungamo District, where he will be buried on Saturday. The university vehicle carrying his body departed campus at 6:00 pm on Wednesday.
A delegation of 48 students from his faculty and close friends will travel to Ntungamo for his send-off, in line with the university’s Student Burial Policy. The family has also been supported under the same policy.
Brighton is the second Ugandan university student to die in less than a week, coming days after Makerere University’s Amongin Francisca died from carbon monoxide poisoning in her hostel room on May 9.
He was in his early twenties.
