Shock as P6 Girl Found Hanging From Mango Tree After Alleged Punishment at Home

A 15-year-old primary school girl was found hanging from a mango tree outside her family home in Bukedea district on Thursday morning, hours after she was disciplined by her mother for coming home late.

Mary Imongot, a primary six pupil at Kakori Primary School, was discovered by community members at around 6 am in Kakori village, Kabarwa sub-county.

According to relatives, the events that led to her death began on Wednesday, May 13, when Imongot left home for the weekly market without telling her mother, Mary Ikiding, and did not return until late in the evening. At around 7 pm, her mother found her standing by the roadside in the company of several boys and took her back home, where she was disciplined.

After that, relatives said Imongot appeared calm. She joined the rest of the family for supper at around 9 pm and later went to sleep in the grass-thatched hut she shared with her younger sister.

Sometime during the night, she quietly slipped out of the house. She is believed to have taken a rope and hanged herself from a mango tree a short distance from the family home.

“When we woke up at around 6 am, we found Imongot hanging from the mango tree. We also noticed that she had tied a handkerchief around her face covering her eyes,” one relative said.

Kabarwa sub-county LC III chairperson Ben Angura said he rushed to the scene after receiving word of the incident and immediately asked residents to leave the area undisturbed.

“When I arrived, I directed everyone not to touch anything until the police arrived. In such cases, it is the responsibility of police to remove the body and investigate the circumstances surrounding the death,” Angura said.

As of 8:30 am, the body was still at the scene as family members and neighbours waited for police to arrive. Angura said he had already notified them. Police had not released any statement by the time of filing this report.
