Police in the Wamala Region have rescued 48 dogs and arrested three individuals during a crackdown on illegal dog shelters operating in Mityana Municipality.
The operation, which was carried out on June 12, 2026, followed intelligence reports and complaints from residents about the treatment of animals in several locations within Busimbi Division.
Police targeted suspected dog keeping facilities in Kansuleti, Kasimbi and Bamunanika, where authorities believed animals were being kept under poor conditions.
According to police, the shelters had become a growing concern among members of the public, who reported cases of animal mistreatment and raised fears about the welfare of the dogs. When officers visited the premises, they reportedly found many of the animals living in unhealthy and unsafe conditions.
Investigators said several dogs appeared to be suffering from serious injuries, including broken limbs and severed tails. Others were found severely underfed and in poor health. Authorities also established that none of the rescued animals had documented vaccination records, increasing concerns about potential disease outbreaks and public health risks.
A total of 48 dogs were removed from the facilities and handed over to Animal Lifeline Uganda for immediate care and rehabilitation. The organization, which operates a holding center in Kateete Cell, Kireku Ward, Busimbi Division, has since taken custody of the animals.
Officials from the organization said they will work with the district veterinary officer to ensure the dogs receive proper medical attention, vaccinations and improved living conditions. Plans are also underway to manage breeding among the animals and facilitate adoption opportunities for members of the public interested in giving the rescued dogs new homes.
Police confirmed the arrest of three suspects believed to be responsible for the mistreatment of the animals. The suspects are expected to face charges related to animal cruelty, along with any additional offenses that may be recommended by the Resident State Attorney after investigations are completed.
Authorities have reminded the public that anyone intending to operate animal shelters or care for stray animals must comply with legal requirements and obtain the necessary approvals from relevant authorities.
Police say investigations remain ongoing as they seek to establish the full extent of the illegal operations and ensure that animal welfare laws are properly enforced throughout the district.
