Museveni’s Grandson Ruhamya Kainerugaba Joins UPDF, First Photo in Uniform Goes Viral

A new photo of Private Ruhamya Kainerugaba, the son of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba and grandson of President Yoweri Museveni, has gone viral on social media, giving Ugandans their first clear look at his enlistment in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). The image shows Ruhamya dressed in full Special Forces Command (SFC) uniform, fully equipped with digital camouflage gear, tactical helmet, bulletproof vest, modern rifle, and large military backpack. The Ugandan flag is clearly visible on the sleeves of his uniform, and Ruhamya stands upright, calm, and focused as he looks directly at the camera.

The photo is believed to have been taken at a UPDF training camp, signaling that Ruhamya is actively involved in military training and now part of one of Uganda’s most elite army units. His father, General Muhoozi, confirmed the development last month in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. He wrote, “I’m extremely happy to announce that after 31 years in God’s Army, UPDF, God has blessed the House of Museveni with another soldier as of last month. Private Ruhamya Kainerugaba, may Almighty God bless him as He did me.”

Private Ruhamya’s decision to join the army adds another chapter to the Museveni family’s long military history. President Yoweri Museveni came to power in 1986 after leading a five-year armed struggle under the National Resistance Army, which later became the UPDF. His son, Muhoozi, joined the army in 1999, studied at some of the world’s top military academies, and later rose to lead both the Special Forces Command and the Land Forces of the UPDF.

Observers say Ruhamya’s enlistment is not just a personal decision but a move filled with political and historical meaning. Political analyst Stuart Bwambale commented that the photo represents more than a young man joining the army. According to him, it is a symbol of continuity, family legacy, and national influence through the military.

The Special Forces Command, where Ruhamya is believed to be serving, is one of the UPDF’s most elite branches. It is responsible for protecting the president, responding to major threats like terrorism, and carrying out key security operations. Members of the SFC go through some of the toughest training in the entire military.

While Private Ruhamya’s military journey has just begun, the viral photo has already sparked national conversation, highlighting how the Museveni family’s strong ties to the army continue to shape Uganda’s political and military landscape.
