A traditional healer operating in Mpigi Town Council is in police custody after authorities shut down his shrine following complaints from residents accusing him of preying on female clients who sought his services.
The healer, Yusufu Kaweesi, commonly known as Jjaja Isabirye, was arrested on Thursday during an operation carried out by police and local leaders in Kitavujja Cell, Ward C.
Officials said concerns had been growing within the community over the healer’s conduct, prompting police to move in and investigate the allegations. The operation was coordinated by officers from Mpigi Central Police Station alongside local authorities responsible for overseeing traditional healers.
Following the raid, the shrine was closed and a number of items were taken away for examination. Among the recovered items were sharp weapons, including a machete and a dagger, as well as documents and other materials that investigators believe could be relevant to the case.
Authorities say the exhibits will be analyzed as detectives work to establish whether any criminal offences were committed.
Residents who witnessed the operation welcomed the move, saying complaints about the healer had circulated within the area for some time.
Police have not disclosed the number of complainants involved but say investigations are ongoing and additional victims or witnesses are encouraged to come forward.
Kaweesi has strongly rejected the accusations, maintaining that he is innocent and claiming the allegations are intended to ruin his standing in the community.
Local leaders defended the decision to close the shrine, saying it was necessary to safeguard members of the public while investigators carry out their work.
The suspect is currently being held at Mpigi Central Police Station as inquiries continue.
