A man was found dead inside his vehicle on Friday afternoon after he became unresponsive while stuck in a heavy traffic jam in Kampala.
The incident took place near La Grand Hotel. The driver was alone in a Toyota Mark X with registration number UBE 261F. He suddenly stopped responding as vehicles piled up around him and traffic came to a standstill.
Eyewitnesses said other motorists soon grew worried when they saw the car remain completely stationary for what seemed like an unusually long time. Several people got out of their own vehicles and tried to help, but their efforts failed because the car doors were locked from inside. No one could get immediate access to the man.
By the time this report was filed, the cause of death had still not been officially determined. Police and other authorities have said they will carry out a full investigation to establish exactly what happened.
The tragedy has once again highlighted serious public health concerns facing drivers in the city. Observers point out that problems such as stress, hypertension and extreme fatigue have become far more common among people who commute daily through Kampala’s crowded streets.
It has also sparked fresh debate about the toll that long hours of traffic congestion take on the physical and mental wellbeing of road users across the capital.
