Former Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has disclosed that he is no longer in Saudi Arabia and is currently staying in an undisclosed neighbouring East African country as he continues to monitor Uganda’s evolving political situation.
The veteran opposition politician made the revelation on Friday through a post on social media while reacting to the re-arrest of People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Muwanga Kivumbi. Kivumbi was taken into custody by security operatives only hours after being released from prison.
In his message, Ssemujju argued that Uganda’s political environment had significantly changed during the five months Kivumbi spent at Kitalya Prison.
“My brother @MuwangaMKivumbi. While you were away in Kitalya Prison for 5 months, a new order was proclaimed in Uganda. Criticising members of Museveni family means you don’t like the country and it is therefore a criminal offence,” Ssemujju wrote.
He further alleged that the country’s justice system had shifted away from established legal procedures, claiming that suspects intercepted by police are now first handed over to the military before any court process.
“Muzungu colonial law was replaced with traditional/mob justice,” he said, adding that those arrested are allegedly subjected to what he described as a “Bachwezi prison initiation ceremony” in military detention facilities.
Ssemujju also confirmed that he had relocated from Saudi Arabia but declined to reveal his exact location or indicate when he plans to return to Uganda.
“I am also in a neighbouring country trying to learn them. I will through our lawyer Medard Sseggona send you a list of what I have recorded so far,” he posted.
The former legislator travelled to Saudi Arabia in June to perform the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. At the time, he explained that the trip had caused him to miss one of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago’s court appearances.
While in the holy city, Ssemujju shared a video saying he had travelled to pray for both himself and Uganda. He also stated that he was not intimidated by President Yoweri Museveni or Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
During the same message, he accused the government of increasing political repression and criticised President Museveni for what he described as defending acts of violence and the conduct of his son, Gen Muhoozi.
“There will be a time when we shall all go to God’s ‘basement’ even if you have ‘basements’ here on earth where you hold people,” he said.
Ssemujju’s departure from Uganda came shortly after Gen Muhoozi publicly suggested that both he and Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi would be “next” following the arrest of Lukwago, remarks that fueled speculation the opposition politician had temporarily left the country over security concerns.
