Kampala police are searching for a private security guard accused of stealing Shs290 million in cash and Shs500 million in gold from a company vehicle he was paid to protect.
The suspect is Justine Akena, who works for Magnum Security Group and lives in Naguru Go Down. He was on duty guarding the offices of Goldex Uganda Limited along Mawanda Road when the theft took place.
According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, Akena struck on the evening of April 10, 2026, at about 8pm. He opened a pearl-white Toyota Noah with registration number UA 264AN and took a bag containing the cash. He also removed gold from the same vehicle, then locked the offices and vanished.
Police say Akena had studied the company’s daily routines over time and spotted security gaps he could exploit. On the day of the theft, an employee had driven him into the city centre and back to the office. During that trip, investigators believe he noticed the cash and gold inside the car.
When they returned around 8pm, the offices were already locked. The staff member responsible for the valuables did not want to carry the heavy bag inside and left it in the vehicle instead. That decision gave Akena the chance to break into the car, grab the bag, lock the vehicle again, and disappear.
Owoyesigyire confirmed that the guard has fled to an unknown location, but officers are actively working to track him down and make an arrest.
