Sri Lanka Customs has arrested a 47-year-old Ugandan woman at Bandaranaike International Airport after intercepting a major cocaine smuggling attempt, officials announced.
The suspect arrived on Qatar Airways flight QR664, which had traveled from Uganda through Doha before landing in Sri Lanka. She was singled out for inspection upon arrival based on intelligence information and risk profiling by customs officers.
During the search, officers discovered 21 cocaine capsules that had been concealed in her clothing. The capsules weighed a combined 274 grams and carry an estimated street value of approximately Rs. 12.33 million(around ugx493,687,832 million).
Authorities also suspect the woman may have swallowed additional cocaine pellets. Medical examinations and legal procedures are currently underway to establish whether this is the case.
The suspect, along with all seized narcotics, has been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Sri Lanka Customs said the successful interception is a demonstration of the effectiveness of its intelligence-led operations and the tight surveillance it maintains at the country’s international entry points.
Officials took the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to fighting global drug trafficking and to ensuring that Sri Lanka is not used as a transit hub or destination for illegal substances.
