A 48-year-old man has died after collapsing during a private encounter at a rest house in Dowa District, with medical findings indicating that the death was linked to heart complications caused by high blood pressure.
The deceased, identified as Bernado Khinda Chilichawo, had reportedly checked into a guest house with his 21-year-old girlfriend before the incident occurred.
According to Dowa Police spokesperson Alice Sitima, the couple booked a room and later left the premises together. They returned carrying two bottles of juice, which investigators believe may have included an energy drink.
Police said Chilichawo consumed one of the drinks and remained in good condition. However, after taking the second bottle, he suddenly collapsed inside the room.
His companion immediately raised an alarm, prompting housekeepers to rush to the scene. He was taken to Blessings Private Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
A postmortem examination later determined that Chilichawo died from cardiac failure resulting from hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure.
The deceased was a resident of Kalongola Village under Traditional Authority Dzoole in Dowa District.
Police have since concluded investigations into the incident, with medical findings ruling the death as a result of natural health complications rather than foul play.
Health experts often warn that individuals with underlying cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, may face increased health risks during strenuous physical activity, particularly if the condition is undiagnosed or poorly managed.
