Seven people have died and two others seriously hurt in a road crash that happened Saturday morning in Sheema Municipality.
The accident took place around 6:30 a.m. at Rushara in Kabwohe, along the Mbarara-Bushenyi Highway. A black Toyota Fielder, registration number UA 702DL, was heading from Bushenyi toward Mbarara when it crashed.
Acting Greater Bushenyi Region Police spokesperson SP Apollo Tayebwa confirmed that all seven people in the vehicle died at the scene. The two survivors were rushed to ICOBI Hospital for treatment.
“Seven people lost their lives in the accident, and two survivors were rushed to ICOBI Hospital for medical attention,” SP Tayebwa said.
Early reports suggest the victims were on their way home after attending overnight prayers at St. Rose Catholic Church, with residents coming from Rukinga, Kabingo, Kitooha, and Karushegu.
Police arrived quickly and have opened an investigation into what caused the crash. “Our traffic officers responded promptly and have commenced investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash,” SP Tayebwa added.
The names of those who died had not been released by press time. Their bodies were moved to Kabwohe Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examination.
Police are asking all road users to take extra care, particularly in the early morning hours, as the investigation continues.
