A 28-year-old mother of newborn triplets was abandoned by her husband at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital after he discovered she was expecting three babies.
Obvious Atuhaire, a peasant farmer from Kagando Cell in Nyakayojo Division, Mbarara City, has been at the hospital since February 3 when she delivered two girls and a boy at 35 weeks. The babies were born prematurely and require close medical attention.
Her husband, Moses Tukwatanise, walked out in September last year, shortly after an antenatal check-up confirmed she was carrying triplets. He has not returned.
Atuhaire, who rents a single room in Nyakayojo, said the Shs100,000 she had saved before the birth has since run out on food and medication during her hospital stay, leaving her with nothing to fall back on.
“I had saved about Shs100,000, but it has been exhausted on food and medication while at the hospital,” she said.
Hospital authorities say Atuhaire currently has no reliable support to care for the three newborns, who need extra attention because of their premature birth. Staff are now calling on well-wishers and community leaders to provide basic necessities including baby clothes, food and medical supplies as she prepares to leave the hospital.
Tukwatanise has not been seen or heard from since he abandoned the family months ago.
