The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded businessman Muhandiki Andrew in connection with a multi-billion shilling scandal involving the misappropriation of funds meant for teachers’ welfare.

Muhandiki was on Tuesday arraigned before court by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, working jointly with the Directorate of Criminal Intelligence and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. He faces charges of theft and has been remanded until January 14, 2026.

According to the prosecution, Muhandiki, together with accomplices who are still at large, fraudulently withdrew UGX 815,000,000 from the account of the Uganda Liberal Teachers Savings and Credit Cooperative Society in May 2025. The withdrawal was allegedly made without the consent or knowledge of the SACCO members.

Investigators told court that the money was taken through what they described as a fake agreement. Muhandiki is accused of entering into a sham contract with former leaders of the SACCO, who acted as his accomplices. Under the agreement, he was purportedly contracted to develop land measuring about 500 acres in Kyangwali on behalf of the teachers SACCO.

However, investigations later revealed that the land was non-existent. The former SACCO leaders had claimed that the land had been purchased at a cost of UGX 2.75 billion, but authorities established that no such land existed. Prosecutors say the agreement was only created to justify the illegal withdrawal of members’ savings.

Muhandiki now joins the former chairperson, secretary and other officials of the SACCO who were earlier charged in relation to the misappropriation of more than UGX 3.6 billion. The funds form part of UGX 20 billion that was granted to teachers’ SACCOs by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to improve the welfare and financial stability of teachers across the country.

During his appearance before the Chief Magistrate, Muhandiki was not allowed to enter a plea, as the matter involves capital offenses that require handling by a higher court. He was subsequently remanded as investigations continue.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit said efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the remaining suspects involved in the scheme. Authorities also reiterated their commitment to recovering the stolen funds, stressing that the misuse of money intended for teachers’ welfare will not be tolerated.

The case highlights the wider crackdown on corruption involving public and cooperative funds, particularly those meant to support essential workers such as teachers.

Uganda Railways Corporation has released details about a deadly train crash that happened on Friday evening in Bugolobi, which claimed the life of an American citizen, Savannah Gardner.

In a statement, URC explained what happened at the Wankoko railway crossing during the evening commuter service.
” A fatal accident occurred on the evening of Friday, December 19, 2025, at the Wankoko level crossing in Bugolobi. The incident, which took place at approximately 5:37 PM, involved our evening Commuter Train Service travelling from Kampala to Namanve and a private motor vehicle, a Mitsubishi Pajero with registration number UBF 582X.”

According to URC, the crossing was under proper control at the time of the accident. Officers from the Railways Police and URC staff were present, and traffic had been stopped on all connecting roads, including Bugolobi, Port Bell Road, and 3rd Street, to allow the train to pass.

Despite these measures, the driver of the vehicle tried to cross the railway line while the train was approaching. “However, the driver of the Pajero, an American national, attempted to cross the track, resulting in a collision with the oncoming train. URC has instituted internal investigations and is fully cooperating with Uganda Police Force investigators to find out what exactly happened.”

Following the crash, messages began circulating on social media asking people to pray and offer financial help to the Gardner family. Savannah and her husband, Matthew Gardner, are missionaries living in Uganda.

One message described the tragic moment and the condition of the family after the crash.
“Today, as the Gardners were travelling on one of the main streets in Kampala, a train crossed the road and hit their vehicle. Savannah went to Heaven instantly. The two sons are completely fine. Matthew sustained internal injuries and is presently in the hospital. Please pray for Matthew to heal quickly and for the two sons, Jedidiah (age 4) and Mason (1 year old). We praise the Lord that there is a large group of BIMI Africa missionaries there who are assisting them at this time.”

Investigations into the incident are still ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

A bus trip to Nyamira turned into an unexpected comedy after the driver briefly lost the bus keys, leaving passengers confused before everyone burst into laughter.

The bus had stopped for about 15 minutes so passengers could stretch, buy snacks, and use the toilet. When it was time to leave, the driver could not find the keys.

People on the bus started getting impatient and upset. Some questioned how such a simple thing could delay a whole journey, while others blamed the driver for being careless.

After a short while, the situation changed when one passenger walked back holding the keys. He explained that he had gone to the toilet during the stop and feared the bus might leave without him. Since it was late at night, he decided to carry the keys with him so the bus would not move before he returned.

A video of the moment later appeared on social media and quickly went viral. Many Kenyans found the story funny and said they understood why the man did what he did.

Social media users joked that the passenger was smart and refused to take any risk of being left behind.
