URA Enforcement Team Arrests Suspected Smuggler, Seizes 70 Cartons of Illegal Cigarettes

A midnight operation by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Enforcement Team in Pakwach has led to the seizure of 70 cartons of smuggled cigarettes and the arrest of a suspected smuggler following a dramatic vehicle chase.

The operation was launched after enforcement officers received intelligence from an informant about the movements of a suspected cigarette smuggler identified as Ntambala, who had reportedly evaded authorities on several previous occasions.

According to URA, officers tracked a Toyota Hilux, registration number UBF 488G, believed to be transporting the contraband. Once the vehicle was spotted, enforcement officers pursued it through the night.

The chase came to an end when the driver stopped the pickup truck in the middle of the road before all three occupants abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.

While two of the suspects managed to flee, officers arrested Ntambala and handed him over to Pakwach Central Police Station, where he is expected to face smuggling-related charges.

A search of the abandoned pickup truck uncovered 70 cartons of Supermatch cigarettes, which investigators believe were being transported illegally.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly disclosed the source of the smuggled cigarettes and agreed to cooperate with investigators as they pursue the remaining consignments and other individuals connected to the operation.

URA said the seizure forms part of its ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and protect government revenue by intercepting illegally imported goods before they enter the local market.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
