A 100-year-old woman from Lwengo District has stunned residents after constructing her own grave inside her home compound and announcing plans for a celebration before her death.
Dorothy Nantale, a centenarian from Bulasana Village, says the grave is part of a lifelong dream to prepare what she calls her “final home” while she is still alive and energetic enough to oversee the work.
In a video shared by Tayari West TV, the elderly woman was seen leaning on a walking stick while supervising the construction project. Despite her age, Nantale appeared active and determined as workers continued digging and building the structure.
According to Nantale, the decision was deeply personal and had nothing to do with superstition or fear of death. She explained that she had wanted to build her own resting place for many years but delayed the project because she struggled to find trustworthy builders.
“People may think I am strange, but this is something I have wanted for many years,” she said. “I wanted to prepare my final home while I am still alive and still energetic enough to supervise the work.”
The elderly woman revealed that her husband and children all passed away years ago, leaving her without immediate family members. She said this motivated her to take control of her burial arrangements early enough.
Nantale also dismissed criticism from some community members who questioned why she was building a modern grave while continuing to live in a modest house.
“This is my permanent home. Others build houses where they stay temporarily, but this one will be my home forever,” she said with a smile.
The grave, which is said to be about 10 feet deep, reportedly contains a specially designed inner chamber similar to burial styles commonly associated with Muslims, although Nantale says she is a Christian.
She further disclosed that she has already purchased her coffin and plans to organise a celebration once the grave is completed. The event, which she compared to a housewarming party, is expected to coincide with her birthday celebrations.
Nantale has also appealed to well-wishers for gifts and financial contributions towards the planned ceremony, saying she wants to celebrate her life with the people around her before she dies.
Her unusual preparations have sparked widespread discussion in the community, with some residents expressing shock while others praised her openness and courage in planning for death on her own terms.
