How Dr. James Musinguzi Is Transforming Uganda’s Wildlife Conservation into a World-Class Tourism Sector

    By OnionMay 17, 2026

James Musinguzi, the Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, has emerged as one of Uganda’s most respected conservation leaders, earning recognition for his contribution to wildlife protection, environmental education, and tourism development.

With more than 20 years of experience in conservation and public administration, Dr. Musinguzi has played a central role in strengthening Uganda’s wildlife sector both locally and internationally.

Before joining UWA, he served for nearly two decades at the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre, commonly known as UWEC, where he rose from Education Officer to Executive Director.

During his leadership at UWEC, the institution underwent major transformation through the expansion of wildlife infrastructure, improved conservation education programs, and stronger international partnerships. The institution was later ranked among the leading wildlife conservation and education centres in East, West, and Central Africa by the Pan African Association of Zoos and Aquaria.

Dr. Musinguzi is also an accomplished academic and researcher. He holds a PhD in Management specializing in Environment and Natural Resources Management from Mbarara University of Science and Technology, alongside a Master’s degree in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Environment Conservation Biology.

Over the years, he has represented Uganda at major international conservation conferences in countries including Australia, the United States, Germany, Spain, South Africa, Japan, Thailand, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, presenting research on wildlife conservation, climate change, sustainable tourism, and community engagement.

He currently serves as Chairman of the Pan African Association of Zoos and Aquaria and has also contributed to international conservation efforts through the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

His work in conservation and environmental education has earned him several recognitions, including the Golden Jubilee Medal awarded by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his service and leadership.

Many players in Uganda’s tourism and conservation sector continue to credit Dr. Musinguzi for promoting wildlife education, strengthening conservation awareness, and improving Uganda’s image in the global tourism industry.
