Victoria Sugar Congratulates Museveni on Swearing-In, Praises Uganda’s Economic Progress

Victoria Sugar Limited has congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni following his swearing-in ceremony, calling the occasion a significant moment for Uganda’s stability and continued economic growth.

In a message released shortly after the inauguration, the sugar manufacturer praised President Museveni’s leadership and reaffirmed its commitment to Uganda’s industrialisation journey through agro-processing, job creation, clean energy and community development.

“This marks the beginning of another chapter of leadership, responsibility, and service to the nation. We wish His Excellency continued strength, wisdom, and success as he steers Uganda toward greater prosperity,” the company said.

President Museveni has led Uganda since 1986, widely credited with restoring political stability and rebuilding an economy that had been severely disrupted by years of conflict. During his time in office, the country has seen considerable investment in roads, energy, manufacturing, education and agriculture, all areas his administration has prioritised in the push toward middle-income status.

He has long pushed for value addition in agriculture, urging local industries to process Uganda’s raw materials at home rather than exporting them unfinished. His government’s backing of industrial parks, power infrastructure and private sector growth has helped manufacturers across the country expand, including players in the sugar sector.

Victoria Sugar Limited has grown into one of Uganda’s notable homegrown agro-industrial companies, involved in large-scale sugarcane farming and processing while supplying a significant share of the country’s domestic sugar needs. The company also supports thousands of farmers and out-growers within its supply chain.

The firm has gone beyond sugar production to generate renewable electricity from bagasse, the fibrous byproduct left after sugarcane is crushed. This approach reduces industrial waste while contributing to Uganda’s clean energy goals.

Directly and indirectly, Victoria Sugar supports over 10,000 livelihoods across farming, transport, logistics, retail, mechanical services and factory work, making it one of the more impactful private sector employers in rural Uganda. The company also runs community outreach and social welfare programs targeting populations around its operational areas.

Uganda’s Sugar Industry

Uganda’s sugar sector is one of the country’s most important agro-industrial pillars, contributing to GDP, export earnings, employment and rural development. It supports hundreds of thousands of people through factory jobs, out-grower schemes, distribution networks and related services.

The country has shifted from being a sugar importer to a regional exporter, with Ugandan sugar now reaching markets across East and Central Africa. The industry also brings in foreign exchange and plays a role in food security.

Sugar manufacturers have increasingly added electricity generation to their operations, using bagasse-powered plants to feed renewable energy into the national grid.

As President Museveni begins a new term, industry stakeholders say Uganda’s economic future will depend on deepening the partnership between government and the private sector to grow industry, expand jobs and add more value to the country’s agricultural output.
