A female police officer attached to Namukosi Police Station in Mityana District has been stabbed to death by her boyfriend in Gulu City, police confirmed on Thursday.
PC Harriet Akera, badge number 82983, was killed on Wednesday afternoon, April 23, in Library Cell, Bardege, Layibi Division. Police have named her boyfriend, Denis Brian Apire, as the suspect.
The two had been in a relationship since 2023 before things between them began falling apart. According to police, Akera travelled from Mityana to Gulu City on April 21 to meet Apire and try to sort out their troubled relationship. They met at Flamingo Guest House, talked things over, and then went their separate ways.
But that was not the end of it. Akera later called Apire and the two met again. That meeting turned into a heated argument, which soon became physical. At some point during the struggle, Apire pulled out a knife and stabbed Akera in the back.
Witnesses told police that just before the stabbing, Akera had raised an alarm accusing Apire of being a thief. People who rushed to the scene tried to attack Apire, but security operatives arrived in time and took him into custody.
Clinical officer John Baptist Jalar documented that Akera was bleeding heavily when she was rushed to Victory Health Centre for emergency treatment. She was then transferred to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor, where she later died from her injuries.
Aswa West Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong confirmed that Apire is in detention and that the knife used in the attack was recovered from the scene.
