Police in Hoima City have arrested Hoima District Vice Chairperson Hellen Mulumba on allegations that she extorted Shs16.5 million from a job seeker, a case that adds to a growing list of fraud complaints against local government officials in the area.
Mulumba was picked up on Monday evening within Hoima City and transferred to Hoima City Central Police Station, according to police sources.
Investigators say she allegedly collected the money from a young job seeker after promising to help them secure employment within the district. When no job came through, the victim reported the matter to police. Their identity has not been disclosed as the investigation continues.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and said the inquiry is still active. He also revealed that several other officials and political figures in the district are being looked into over similar allegations involving job seekers who were asked to pay for positions that never came through.
“The investigations are ongoing,” Hakiza said, adding that more people could be implicated as police broaden their probe.
Hoima region has seen a sharp rise in such complaints in recent months, with residents accusing officials of collecting money from job applicants in exchange for government positions that ultimately do not materialise. The trend has sparked concern about corruption in public recruitment, and there are growing calls for tighter oversight and stronger accountability in how local governments hire.
