A 26-year-old man has been arrested following a daring daylight attempt to steal a Ghana Police Service armoured vehicle at Nkawie Market in the Ashanti Region, police have confirmed.
Ebenezer Frimpong was taken into custody on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, after allegedly jumping into the driver’s seat of the unattended armoured vehicle and speeding off, triggering a high-speed chase that lasted about 30 minutes.
According to a police situational report, the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. near Nkawie Market in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality. Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) had parked the vehicle, registration number GP 1131, briefly to purchase medication from a nearby pharmacy while transporting it from Nkawie to the Regional Police Workshop in Kumasi for routine servicing. He left the engine running.
Frimpong, who was passing by at the time, seized the opportunity, entered the vehicle, and drove off from the busy market area, leaving bystanders in shock. An alarm was immediately raised, prompting a swift response from the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
A combined SWAT team of seven tactical officers, led by Inspector Benjamin Nartey, was dispatched and pursued the suspect in what has been described as a “Rambo-style hot chase” along the Abuakwa-Kumasi stretch. The pursuit ended at Mim near Abuakwa, where Frimpong was intercepted and arrested.
The armoured vehicle was recovered intact and has been retained as an exhibit. Frimpong was initially detained at the Abuakwa District Police Command before being transferred to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further investigations.
Police have not yet disclosed any motive for the alleged theft. Frimpong remains in custody as investigations continue.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion online, with many Ghanaians expressing astonishment at the boldness of the attempt in broad daylight. No injuries were reported during the chase.
