Kampala police have arrested a private security guard in connection with the theft of cash and gold valued at hundreds of millions of shillings.
The suspect, Akena Justine, was apprehended on April 15, 2026, after several days of investigation into the incident that took place earlier this month. Akena worked for Magnum Security Company and had been assigned to guard the premises of Goldex Uganda Limited along Mawanda Road in Kampala.
He is accused of stealing a bag that contained 29 million shillings in cash and 900 grams of gold worth approximately 500 million shillings. The bag was taken from a motor vehicle belonging to Katuramu Maggie. The theft happened on April 10 while Akena was on duty at the Goldex Uganda Limited offices.
Police say that shortly after the incident, the suspect locked up the premises and went into hiding. This move triggered a manhunt by the authorities. Officers eventually tracked him down and arrested him at around 10:30 p.m. in Gaspa Village, Bweyale Town Council.
During interrogation, Akena reportedly admitted to committing the offence. Preliminary investigations also revealed that he had used part of the stolen money to start a retail shop. It was from that same shop that he was eventually arrested.
Akena is currently being held at Mawanda Road Police Station while investigations continue. Authorities say he will be charged in court once the inquiries are complete.
