SHOCKING: Top Minister Found Dead in Vehicle, Cause of Death Unclear

    By OnionApril 17, 2026

A Burundian minister died in a car accident early Thursday, the government announced, though sources say the cause of death remains unclear and is now under investigation.

Gabby Bugaga, the minister of communication and media, was found dead inside his damaged four-by-four. Farmers discovered the vehicle about 10 meters off a rarely used and notoriously dangerous road that snakes through oil palm plantations in Kivoga, roughly 10 kilometers north of Bujumbura, the country’s economic capital.

Local farmers who came across the scene shared photos on social media. Two sources who knew Bugaga confirmed the images showed his body slumped sideways in the driver’s seat.

In a brief statement, government spokesman Jerome Niyonzima said the country “deeply regrets to announce the unexpected death of the Minister of Communication and Media, Mr. Gabby Bugaga, which occurred at dawn on April 16, 2026, following an accident.” Officials released no other details.

A police source later confirmed the body belonged to the minister and described a deep wound on his skull along with heavy damage to the right side and rear of the vehicle. The cabin itself appeared intact, the source noted, raising questions about how the minister sustained such an injury without any front-end impact.

“The death of the Minister of Communication has many unanswered questions,” the police source said. Another person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named, claimed the government wants to avoid a scandal and has chosen to close the case without a full official probe.

An administrative official told AFP, however, that an investigation is already underway to establish exactly what happened.

Several top officials rushed to the scene Thursday morning, including Interior Minister Leonidas Ndaruzaniye, Justice Minister Alfred Ahingejeje, the attorney general and senior security figures.

Bugaga began his career as a journalist with the Burundian National Radio and Television. He later handled communications for several national institutions before joining the Independent National Electoral Commission. He was appointed minister of communication in 2025.
