Three Dead, Eight Injured in Deadly Crash on Kampala–Gulu Highway

Three people died and eight were injured Friday night after a lorry driver’s overtaking attempt sent his truck straight into an oncoming minibus on the Kampala-Gulu Highway in Luwero District.

The Tata lorry, loaded with poles and heading to Kampala, swung into the oncoming lane to pass a line of vehicles and hit a Toyota Hiace head-on near Nkondo Village, Nyimbwa Sub-county, at around 11:30 PM. The minibus was carrying passengers from Kampala to Amolatar.

All three who died were men in the minibus, killed on impact. The eight survivors were taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital and Luwero Hospital.

Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima confirmed the details Saturday. The drivers and victims had not been identified by press time. Bodies went to Luwero Hospital mortuary; both vehicles were towed to Bombo Police Station. Investigations continue.

This is the second fatal crash on the highway this month. Five people died on March 10 when a Mega Bus hit a stationary truck on the same road. Locals have long demanded tougher enforcement on a corridor where trucks speeding and overtaking at night keep killing people.
