Avoid Corruption and Serve Ugandans,” NRM Chairman Prosper Tells Police Officers as He Rewards Champions with Bulls at Mbarara DPC Tournament

    By Muhumuza VensorMarch 4, 2026

Police officers from across Mbarara District have concluded a four-day inter-station tournament that brought together teams in football and netball, with Bwizibwera Police Station and Rubindi Town Council Police Station emerging as champions in their respective disciplines.

The tournament, organised by Mbarara District Police Commander Byamukama Benon, ran from Thursday to Sunday and drew participants from several police stations across the district. Bwizibwera Police Station claimed the football trophy after defeating Kagongi Police Station in the final, while Rubindi Town Council Police Station beat Bwizibwera in the netball showdown to take that title.

Winners received medals, trophies and goats. NRM Mbarara District Chairman Prosper Tuhaise Kururagire, who was the Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony, added a bull for each winning team.

Speaking at the ceremony, Tuhaise urged officers to carry the same discipline displayed on the pitch into their work. “The NRM government is pro-people,” he said. “Police officers must serve citizens genuinely, avoid corruption, and treat Ugandans with respect because they are the reason you wear the uniform.”

He praised DPC Byamukama for organising the event and suggested it was a model worth replicating across the country. “If all Police Commanders across Uganda were organizing such unifying and empowering activities, our country would register the least cases of criminality among officers,” he said. “This is leadership that builds teamwork, discipline, and love for the nation.”

Tuhaise also spoke about Uganda’s stability, attributing it to the country’s leadership. “Many African countries are grappling with insecurity and political instability, but Uganda remains peaceful because of the good leadership of President Museveni and his son Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba who is our CDF,” he said.

DPC Byamukama told officers that the tournament was about more than winning. He said sporting activities within the force build physical fitness, mental resilience and the kind of cohesion that effective policing requires.

Tuhaise is a well-known figure in East African sports circles. He owns a sports betting company operating across several countries in the region and chairs Bwizibwera United FC, one of Western Uganda’s prominent football clubs. He has over the years directed significant investment into youth sports, which he regards as a tool for keeping young people away from crime and opening pathways to opportunity.
